DJ Yirvin is one of the most prolific music producers that have emerged out of the Venezuelan underground since the early 2000s. He is one of the early Miniteca DJs that produced his own tracks, and helped create and give shape to the sounds of Changa, Raptor House (Alongside DJ Babatr, DJ Deep RH, and others), and his own Hard Fusion style.

Growing up in the late 1990s - early 2000s Miniteca scene (his father, Enrique Toro, was the founder of the Eruption Miniteca and was the go to guy who repaired local Sound Systems for many others) he absorbed all of the forms of dance music being played at the time: early underground House, Tribal, and early forms of Techno, alongside the tropical sounds of Salsa, Merengue, Afro-Venezuelan drums, among other styles. All of these influences can be found in his productions, which are many, and can be counted by the hundreds, hence the nickname “El Máximo Creador”.

By the early 2000s, DJ Yirvin joined forces with DJ Baba and his crew, and was part of the Raptor House revolution. They were hosting their own events, playing their own productions, while constantly remixing each other’s tracks. As the Raptor House sound exploded, the scene became an unstoppable force and also a sign of identity for the ghettos in Caracas. Both DJ Baba and DJ Yirvin made unique tracks for each of the Barrios related to the scene, and a new generation of young “Changa” dancers erupted through weekend “Matinees” and dance battles.

During the years 2002 - 2007, DJ Yirvin created some of the most iconic tracks of the scene. Songs like ‘Mételo Sácalo’, ‘Fuma Marihuana’, ‘Dale Culo al Waperó’, ‘Samba a los Conejos‘, ‘Pan con Mortadela‘, ‘Petarazo‘ and ‘Petare‘ (these last two dedicated to the biggest Barrio of Caracas), remain staple signature tracks of the Venezuelan scene to this day.

As his sound evolved throughout the years, he explored many styles, such as Tribal, House and his own Hard Fusion style.

This CHANGA FUSION EP, explores some of the sounds he was working on between 2002 and 2007.


1 - DJ Yirvin feat. DJ Rosmel - El Petarazo
When Petarazo hit the streets of Caracas in the early 2000s, it exploded in the underground via CDrs and in the underground Changa dancer’s scene. The voice by DJ Rosmel, tells the story of how the neighbours of Petare (the biggest barrio in Venezuela), took the Policía Metropolitana’s headquarters by force and burnt it to the ground after some violent incidents involving people from the community. This incident, which the press labeled “El Petarazo”, is narrated by Rosmel with a unique sense of humoUr. In a way, it symbolizes how these local forms of house and techno were speaking to their own communities not only musically but also lyrically. This is one of the tracks that worked as a bridge between Yirvin and the Raptor House crew.

2- DJ Yirvin - Aquitojo
Aquitojo is an example of Yirvin’s unique way of blending syncopated latin rhythms with techno. Somewhere between Raptor House and Hard Fusion, this track is an example of Yirvin’s signature sound during the mid 2000s.

3- DJ Yirvin - 2005
Another mid 2000s track, sitting somewhere between Raptor House and Hard Fusion.
The syncopated synths are typical of the time, alongside the “tumpa tumpa” or dembow style of rhythms adapted to techno with low toms and pulsating bass drums.

4- Vicente One More Time - Redada (DJ Yirvin Hard Fusion Mix)
Fully into his own “Hard Fusion” mode, Yirvin remixed this early 2000s Spanish Hardstyle banger to suit Venezuelan dancers, who themselves created unique dance moves
